Once again, Ms. Welfonder brings us to the Scottish Highlands with her MacLean and MacKinnon clans.

The feud between these two families is now over, but there is still an uneasy truce.  So, to help strengthen the ties even more, a marriage has taken place.  Amicia MacKinnon has been wed by proxy to Magnus MacLean, who is off fighting in the Battle of Dupplin Moor.  Amicia is so excited because she has harbored a secret love for Magnus since she was a child.

Now that the battle is over, Magnus returns home to find much to his shock that he’s been wed to Amicia.  He’s always felt something for her, but now that he’s penniless because he’s lost his fortune in the battle, he knows he can’t keep her as his wife.  He doesn’t want her to live in poverty, so he vows to send her back, and thus breaks Amicia’s heart.  However, Amicia isn’t ready to let go so easily and begins to woo her reluctant husband.

This book feels like you have stepped back through time, but then again, all Ms. Welfonder’s books seem to have that aura.  I thoroughly enjoyed the heroine and hero, as she tried to win him and he tries to keep his distance.  The added twist of a third party who tries to keep them apart spices up the book nicely and moves it along.  Even though this book ties in with her previous titles, this one can be read as a stand alone.  A great addition to an already wonderful series.
