Sue Walker’s book, THE REUNION takes place in Edinburg where seven mentally ill teenagers are incarcerated at a psychiatric hospital in 1977. Years later all seven teenagers have been released and worked feverishly to forget and bury their pasts. However, events that occur are bringing back these forgotten days quickly. Innes Haldane, one of the main characters, receives an unnerving voicemail message from a fellow patient at the Unit. Following that patient’s death, Innes finds her stable and quiet life unraveling before her eyes. Innes realizes they must all reunite to save themselves from a killer. Along the journey the reader will met several other interesting characters: Isabella (Abby) Velasco, Danny Rintoul, Simon Calder, Alex Baxendale, Lydia Young and Caroline Franks. All of these former unit patients have many issues and problems that they either haven’t fully dealt with or issues that would wreck havoc on their lives now if exposed. A page turner from the moment the novel begins, the reader is captivated and kept guessing about the plot that is full of twists and turns. For the most part, the chapters are short and easy to read. Walker is constantly giving her audience clues and bits of information to help put the pieces of this puzzle together. The British accent of the characters can take a bit of adjustment; it helps to read those parts aloud. Walker uses many controversial topics such as mental illness, homosexuality, rape, and abuse, in her suspense story. If you want a different spin on your reading, begin THE REUNION today. |
