CITY FOR RANSOM is the first in a series of books introducing Inspector Alastair Ransom.  Ransom is an inspector for the City of Chicago in 1893.  There have been a number of homicides during the World’s Fair and Alastair is on the case.  While Alastair is attempting to investigate these murders, several people hinder his progress.  In the course of this mystery, the author introduces a handful of interesting and intriguing characters.  Griff Drimmer, Alastair’s partner; Philo Keane; Kohler; Dr. James Phileas Tewes, a phrenologist-one who can read skulls; Jane Tewes; and Gabby.

The author discusses the big fire in Chicago of 1871 to give his readers some background information on Ransom.  From reading the details regarding this fire, it is easy to tell that Walker has done his research.  According to Walker, the word Chicago means big stench. Also, Walker is extremely detailed when telling the story and in building his characters. The cliffhanger ending left one hanging.  The good news is there will be a sequel to this novel.
