At heart, DON'T LET THE GOOD LIFE PASS YOU BY is one of the better PublishAmerica offerings. Mary Verdick's experience as an editor shows, as my biggest hesitation with PA books is always poor editing. Though I did find one typo that jumped out at me, I only found one and that is certainly appreciated! Kitty and Ray Maddox own the Happy Trails ranch. Unfortunately, their competition, Tumbling Waters, is proving to be too much. Their reservation numbers are dwindling, and money is becoming more and more tight. When a potential booking for a family reunion is brought to their doorstep, Kitty abandons all plans to attend a rodeo for which Ray has been given free tickets. Kitty does not want their daughter, Jamie, to suffer, so she convinces Ray to go without her. Kitty will stay and give the potential customers a tour of the ranch, while Ray and Jamie go have an evening out. The evening ends in tragedy when Ray is killed in a head-on collision and Jamie is left paralyzed. Kitty realizes she must pick up the pieces of her life and help Jamie through the adjustment. A long-time friend suggests Kitty hire Ben Shelton to help her run the ranch. Ben seems to be exactly what the ranch needs, but bookings become non-existent. When Ben suggests they turn the ranch into a camp for physically challenged children, Kitty is hesitant but agrees with some prodding by Jamie. Kitty never expects to fall in love in the process. Mary Verdick does a fine job building romantic tension and creating an emotional story that did bring a tear or two to my eyes. Though I had issues with Ben's on-again, off-again attitude toward the relationship at hand, I found myself intrigued enough to want to read every page. Now the book description delves further into the plot, but I don't necessarily think readers need to know those details as they happen in the final portion of the book. Therefore, I will not mention them in this review. All in all, DON'T LET THE GOOD LIFE PASS YOU BY is a charming romance. If you have $20 lying around, I do recommend it. However, I still have reservations with the high price of a PublishAmerica paperback in comparison to other books of the same style.
