LINE tells the tale of a future world where androids are commonplace,
big business runs everything, and people can experience virtual
realities just as “real” as real life.
In Cavan Terrill’s vision of the future almost everything in
the world is run by ten mega-companies, including world governments and
armies. This story revolves
around a cast of characters who are either oppressed by these companies
or trying to bring them down. Overall,
the book was readable but I had a hard time connecting to the characters
and the plot. Almost every
character who is introduced died shortly thereafter, making it difficult
to really feel involved in the story.
Since there were no characters who stuck around for very long I
couldn’t become interested in their plight.
For me the most interesting character was the “loneboy,” but
he didn’t appear until almost the end of the novel. There were many
times some elaboration could have helped the story but because the book
was so short it felt like there simply wasn’t time for any
embellishment of the plot. There
were certainly some redeeming factors to this book.
What I enjoyed most were the believable advances in technology.
The androids in the story developed their artificial intelligence
by manifesting multiple personalities and then discarding them as they
achieved sentience. His
concept of the augmentation of humans with microchips and other
enhancements was interesting as well, and I also enjoyed the way he saw
where the internet could go. I would recommend BLURRED LINE to die-hard science fiction fans that are looking for a quick read. Otherwise this may be a book to seek out at the library instead of buying it off the shelf.
