Fourteenth century Scotland was a land of clan unions and clan conflicts.  The land is depicted beautifully in Amanda Scott’s LORD OF THE ISLES.  The Macleod daughters are fathered by a man determined to have his eldest daughter married before any of her sisters.  To this end, he tricks a sister’s suitor into marrying Christina, the eldest daughter.

Christina has lived her life obeying the demands of her father.  Now she must obey a husband who did not intend to marry her.  Her possible attraction to the man she barely knows complicates the already volatile situation.  It seems Christina’s fate is once again in the hands of a man; this time it is Hector “the Ferocious” Maclean.

Hector Maclean is well-known for his fierce nature, but there is something about Christina that challenges everything he thought he knew about himself and about women.  With his pride and reputation on the line, Hector must decide how to repair the mess this marriage has created for him.

Amanda Scott remains true to the historical record and creates a story revolving around two particular families that were actually united in history.  This historical romance gives us a wonderful look at the country and its people.  It was a surprising and enjoyable read, especially since I tend to shy away from the typical “romance novel”.
