Lady Mairi of Isla, daughter of MacDonald, Lord of the Isles and King of the Hebrides, is on her way to testify in behalf of Ian Burk, who stands accused of murder. Mairi is expected to marry Alasdair Stewart, the man her father has picked, but Mairi has other plans.

Lachlan “The Wily” MacLean has his own plans; to marry Mairi and solidify his position in the Isles, but Mairi’s father forbids Lachlan from courting Mairi. That seems to be the impetus for Lachlan and Mairi to fall in love. They plan secret meetings and it is not long before they vow to marry, in secret if necessary.

I found HIGHLAND PRINCESS a bit tedious in starting as I got to know the characters, but the story line developed and held my interest to the end.  I hoped the two lovers could persuade Mairi’s father to allow the marriage but Alasdair kept popping up and getting in the way. There was also the mysterious side of the story--if Ian Burk did not murder Elma MacCoun, then who did? There is a lot of Scottish history to be found within HIGHLAND PRINCESS.  Historical romance fans will find the book worth reading.
