Introverted and on the verge of adulthood, Trixie Shapiro has dreams. However, those dreams involve a life as a stand-up comedienne. For a shy teenager, getting up on stage seems an impossible task. When her drama teacher announces that the class’s exam will involve performing in the senior talent show, Trixie tries to come up with a simple skit. Her best friend, Jazzy, has other ideas. Jazzy signs Trixie up for a stand-up comedy act. Trixie freezes on stage and immediately figures her dreams of becoming a famous comedienne are over. Little does Trixie know, her teacher sees promise and signs her up for a local comedy club's open-mike night. Trixie floors the audience and soon finds herself emceeing some shows. Her dreams may not be out of reach after all, until the boy in school that she has lusted after for years approaches her. He wants to date, but Trixie’s new career may stand between her budding relationship. She has a hard choice to make—does she venture into a new relationship or see if she has what it takes to make it to the big time? COMEDY GIRL is light hearted with a touch of romance and comedy. I think Trixie’s fresh, honest attitude will appeal to many teens. The character comes to life, partly because I am pretty sure she is imaged after the author herself. The author has worked in comedy and knows all the gritty details. My only complaint, and it isn’t anything about the book precisely. Instead, it is a general complaint about comedy in general. Why do so many comedians/comediennes turn to picking on friends and family as their mode of humor? I don’t find personal attacks funny, never have, and much prefer finding humor in situations or stereotypes without naming names. For that reason, I had a harder time enjoying Trixie’s stand-up dialogues within the book. Most readers can take this with a grain of salt however, as this is a personal quibble.
