If you have ever dealt with depression, you understand the unbearable list of symptoms and effects. Dr. Michael Schachter offers insight to the disease, its causes, symptoms, and treatments. The book is set up in two sections. The first deals with understanding what depression is and how to find a suitable treatment. Part one delves into dietary causes of depression, biochemical causes, and finding an understanding doctor. The second portion discusses improving the diet, taking herbal remedies, boosting vitamins, and learning to use prescription medications safely and effectively when the need is there. Every aspect of depression is covered from serotonin levels to hormones to poor nutrition, to other blood chemical imbalances. I found that Dr. Schachter was extremely thorough in discussion solutions that did not require prescription medications such as diet and exercise. DEPRESSION is geared towards the patient, but for those who know or live with a depressed person, there is enough information to help you better understand the other person's feelings. It is an important handbook for anyone who needs solid information on depression in an easy-to-read format.
