In LULLABY, Vicky Langford is trying to help a woman prove her late husband's innocence and clear his name for the sake of their children. Having suspected one man in particular of all the mayhem and murder going on and believing he is also responsible for the murder of her own husband, Detective Danny Langford, Vicky is passionate about bringing down crime boss Richard Blackwell, and obtaining justice for her late husband. What she receives in return are death threats on her life which do nothing to deter her in the least, but when the life of her son is threatened Vicky decides it's not worth the cost and shuts down her unofficial investigation. However, her decision comes too late to prevent the kidnapping of her son, Josh. Determined to get her son back unharmed Vicky, an ex-cop, receives a reminder that she should start thinking like a cop again, if she wants her son back safe and sound. On the road to tracking her son's kidnapper Vicky continues to receive death threats, and every time she believes she's close to getting her son back it seems someone else turns up dead which leads to more questions and more suspicions, but never a solid-rock clue on the whereabouts of her son. It seems Detective Jim McCann is the only one who doesn't believe Vicky is wasting her time going after Richard Blackwell, though he severely disagrees with her methods. Jim has his own reasons for wanting to take down Richard Blackwell, reasons he refuses to share with anyone including Vicky. However, being attracted to her and suspecting she has feelings for him too, Jim is determined to bring Josh home to Vicky unharmed while keeping her alive and safe in the process. There were a lot of times I had trouble believing Vicky was ever a cop, but then the very things that made me doubt it, Sherry Scarpaci would address somewhere in the plot, and I was glad of that. As a new author, Scarpaci has a lot of potential, and overall LULLABY is a good mystery peppered with just a touch of sweet romance, and I would highly recommend it. I'm looking forward to seeing what Scarpaci has in store for her future novels, and, if they also end in a sweet LULLABY.
