Laura Pedersen's collection of short stories is sweet, simple, and absorbing. The collection of twelve emotional tales are short and affecting. My favorite of the collection is the first story titled "Gus Hunts For A Job." The English Mastiff in this story finds himself with little to do as his "children" grow up and move on. Seeking attention, Gus decides to take matters into his own "paws" and search for a fulfilling life. "True To Her Word" shares the tale of a mute woman named Muriel. After her sister dies, Muriel throws caution to the wind and takes over her sister's used book store. As word spreads about Muriel's talent for matching clients with books, the store thrives in popularity. And, so does Muriel. "Racing Daylight" is the charming story of a couple of thirteen-year-old girls who decide to do a little matchmaking. However, their naivety may get them into trouble if they are not careful. "The Twilight Home" is another great story. Todd, a thirty year old professional student, finds himself booted out of his family home. Before he leaves, his father gives him $5,000 and tells him to decide on a career. Todd winds up moving into his grandmother's retirement home where he shakes up the routine more than a little. This is only a sampling of the heartwarming stories offered in THE SWEETEST HOURS. The stories can be about love for another person, attachment to a pet, and even memories of a person who changed a character's life. In a nutshell, THE SWEETEST HOURS is a beautiful collection of the written word. |
