A hawthorn hedge separates the properties of Chatham Hall and Thorne Lodge.  No one remembers when it was built, but the animosity between the two houses has lasted for many generations. The Great Fire of London in 1666 destroyed all records of the royal survey. One day, at church, the unthinkable happened.

When Miss Olivia Hewes, of Chatham Hall, attempted to stand after a church service, Lord Thorne was standing on her dress and it tore. When Randolph, Lord Thorne, apologized and offered to pay for the repairs to her dress, Olivia refused. Onlookers were horrified. For centuries, there had been no exchange of civilities between the two houses.

So begins this wonderful and fast-moving story. I found Catherine Palmer's book to be easily read, and one that the reader will not want to set aside until the last page is reached. I began to hope that the centuries of mistrust would be ended.  Read WILD HEATHER to find out the outcome.
