Sarah Blair and Chandler Carey have been friends for ages, both share a love for tennis.  Leigh Ingram is being raised by her single mom, lives a totally different life than Sarah and Chandler, yet she fits into their world perfectly.  The three complete each other, and then tragedy strikes that will scar them forever.

Years pass and each girl has gone her own way.  Leigh never left Arkansas, while Sarah and Chandler moved on seeking fame and fortune in New York City.  Sarah hopes to begin a promising acting career and leave her past behind.  Chandler bounces from relationship to relationship never quite finding exactly what she needs.  As Chandler’s life spirals downhill, she is again rocked by tragedy.

Despite the miles between them, Leigh, Sarah and Chandler’s lives are interwoven throughout this touching story.  I found the characters easy to relate to – high school in the late 80’s and then trying to find your way in the world in the 90’s.  If you are in your thirties, you’ll find yourself easily understanding Leigh, Sarah and Chandler.  Though, I think women of all ages will enjoy this undemanding, emotional read.

The end of the book contains a reading group guide and an author Q&A.  I found the inclusion of these two items to be very helpful.  There is a lot to think about after reading A SECRET WORD, and the added bonus of hearing the author’s perspective on her story and characters is a nice touch.
