The first book in Madonna’s five new children’s books tells the story of four English girls, Nicole, Amy, Charlotte and Grace, “The English Roses”.  They love spending time together, and share a very common dislike – a girl named Binah whose perfect hair, perfect skin, and perfect everything lays the groundwork for some intense jealousy.  However, a dream will soon change their feelings.

I have to say THE ENGLISH ROSES is not what I expected.  I know it’s harsh, but my first impressions were that Madonna got this book contract solely because of her name.  Biased or not, it seems to happen far too often.  Unknowns are struggling to get their books published while others who have made a name for themselves in other fields get contracts with what seems like little effort.  Instead, the story exceeded its potential.

All biases aside, THE ENGLISH ROSES is a beautifully illustrated book with an even more incredible message about not judging a person by their outer appearance.  The writing is fluid and easy for a child without being boring.  One can only hope that many girls read this book and take the message to heart, it might save some poor adolescent years of torture in the future!  THE ENGLISH ROSES is available in both English and Spanish versions.
