Emma Brimley has not been entirely truthful in her application to the Pettibone School For Young Ladies. While she said she was a widow, she has never been married. She applied for the position to escape her uncle who had nefarious plans for her. The carriage that has met her train has an unexpected passenger already in it – Lord Nicholas Chambers, otherwise known as “Lord Bedchambers”, seems to be sleeping in the corner, but is that Lord Byron he is quoting?
Learning that her position in the school will require her to prepare the young ladies in her charge for their wedding nights, Emma decides her one option is to learn the secrets of the bedchamber and who else would be the ideal teacher? Nicholas, of course, but Nicholas is fascinated by the young woman who has visited him, and has other plans for her.
THE EDUCATION OF MRS. BRIMLEY has all of the usual experiences of a man and a woman but there are many more surprises awaiting you. Nicholas and Emma each have secrets they would prefer the other person did not learn – at least not in the early stages of their friendship. Donna MacMeans’ story of two people falling in love contains the ingredients to keep the reader enthralled. I’ll be watching for more of her work in the future.
