The manager of the Hotel Magdalena in Santiago, Chile regretfully could not help Taylor Travini when she asked for information about her twin brother, Terry, who reportedly had stayed at the hotel. Terry, a wildlife photographer, had told Taylor of his plans to travel to Patagonia and Tierra del Fuego in a trip to photograph penguins. Leaving the hotel, Taylor was nearly run down by a car that seemingly was deliberately aiming for her, and which struck and killed the hotel doorman. To make matters worse, Taylor was arrested and jailed when the crowd accused her of pushing the doorman into the path of the car. Eventually Taylor was released and escorted to the airport to be deported. Escaping her escorts, she wound up in a local bar asking about her brother. Rafe Maguire, an American Ranger working for the Chilean military, overhears her and offers to help her look for her brother after observing that she is being tailed by some unsavory characters. What follows is a marvelous story of the search for Terry from Santiago to Valparaiso to Tierra del Fuego and the discovery of an Al Quada plot to commit an act of terrorism. Once into the story, I found it difficult to put the book down for even as little as one minute. The characters are lifelike and the plot will keep you guessing “What next”? Charlotte Maclay has written a great suspense novel worthy of your bookshelf.
