THE UNFORGIVEN
is the latest feather in the cap of award winning author Patricia
MacDonald. Her previous works are "Stranger in the House,"
"The Girl Next Door," "Suspicious Origin,"
"Lost Innocents," "Secret Admirer," and "Not
Guilty." "Secret Admirer was the winner of the 1997 literary
prize at France's Deauville Film Festival, and THE UNFORGIVEN has been
nominated for the Edgar Award.
THE UNFORGIVEN eases the reader into the world of Maggie Fraser, wrongly
convicted of murdering her lover when she was barely in her early
twenties. After twelve grueling and agonizing years behind bars, Maggie
is released into a world that has gone on without her. Unsure of how to
carry herself in society, she makes her way to the coast of New England
where a job offer at
a small town newspaper is a beacon of hope in her otherwise dark world.
Yet her past haunts her and an accuser who has not forgotten her alleged
crime some twelve years ago is determined to exercise a cruel and
complete revenge against her. The only ally Maggie has is Jess Herlie
who has fallen in love with this quiet and distressed lady. Will
his affection be enough to help Maggie overcome her past? Will the
avenger push her over the edge?
Patricia MacDonald is a highly gifted writer who can create a moving and
realistic scene with mere words. Her ability to make the reader
feel the darkness and hopelessness young Maggie feels when she is
shunned by her own mother, who does not believe in her innocence, is
heartbreaking. Similarly, the way she pictures the methodical
actions of the avenger, devoid of human warmth and instead fraught with
evil precision, is truly disturbing. This novel is not a light read, and
instead is entertainment as much as an indictment against a society that
is too quick to jump to conclusions and condemn those who cannot buy
popularity. This is a book that is not only read but also experienced.
Ms. MacDonald is an amazing artist!
