Josephine Best,
while only seventeen years old, has been to college and owns a
hairdressing shop. As an educated woman of the period, she does not
intend to fit the stereotype image of a woman subservient to her
husband.
When a group of injured Civil War soldiers arrives in her town to
recover from wounds suffered in battle, she befriends one of them.
George Brooks is
immediately charmed by her and sets out to court her. He expects
Josephine to stay at home and raise a family. Another soldier, Adam
Morgan, who has
known her all of his life, is enamored of her and wants to win her for
himself. Adam is less demanding of Josephine's future.
Beverly has written a book that rapidly moves from one situation to
another and keeps the reader guessing the final outcome. I found the
characters to be alive and could see in my mind the events of the period
nearing the end of the Civil War as soldiers were returning home. I
heartily recommend this
book for all audiences.
