On returning from a seven year exile as Governor General to India, Simon Tremaine, the dashing Duke of Foxmoor has met with the King. In return for the King's support in his quest to become Prime Minister, Simon has agreed to try to persuade the King's illegitimate daughter, Louisa North, to become his wife. Having turned Simon down once before and having caused Simon's exile, Louisa still has feelings for Simon but doesn't believe Simon is being entirely honest with her.

Louisa is a member of a Ladies group who want to improve the lot of women and children cast into prison and who must suffer at the hands of cruel guards. When Simon begins to show interest in Louisa's involvement, she feels she has even more reason to mistrust him.

Sabrina Jeffries admits she has fudged with history but ONLY A DUKE WILL DO makes for delightful reading. Set in London in 1821, the book moves at a fast pace and the characters seem to be so lifelike they almost leap off the page at you. Add this one as a "must read".
