Author Lori Jakiela shares pieces of her life starting from her childhood in Trafford, Pennsylvania to her less-than-glamorous life as a flight attendant. These snippets are witty, charming and packed with emotion. As a young girl, Lori spent her time watching Marlo Thomas on That Girl. The show inspired her dream of making it big in New York City. Lori watched as her father worked the mills while dreaming of becoming the next Frank Sinatra. She dealt with her parents' strict views on teenage dating. Lori learned to watch her aunt--a nun who was a member of Narcotics Anonymous--very closely. Lori even watched as the class bully and all around annoying jerk got a role in George Romero's Dawn Of The Dead. Eventually, Lori responded to an ad stating: Like to travel? Want to move to New York? There Lori became a flight attendant and got to travel the world-albeit hurriedly and not always in the manner of her dreams. As Lori found purpose, tragedy followed leading her back to the Pennsylvanian town she'd left. MISS NEW YORK HAS EVERYTHING does skip around as Lori's life progresses. Despite the brief narratives that made the filling for each chapter, each "story" is complete and never feels rushed. The flow of the story moves swiftly and kept me hooked to the pages. I found myself laughing along, as if the author was an old friend. This isn't your typical read, as it is the autobiography of a non-celebrity. Does that take away from the literary value? No, in fact, I think the fact that Lori is just an average person trying to make ends meet helps make the memoir stand-out. |
