Today, many know THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE better as a popular movie starring Catherine Zeta Jones and Liam Neeson.  In reality, Shirley Jackson wrote the novel in 1959.

THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE is the story of Dr. John Montague and a house believed to be haunted.  Dr. Montague brings a group of varied men and women to Hill House, a rambling mansion that is in a state of disrepair.  His goal is to find out exactly what does happen behind the doors of Hill House.

The presence of people in Hill House begins to breathe new life into the manor.  For the house to survive, it must claim one human as its own.  Eleanor Vance, a woman who spent over a decade caring for her dying mother, seems the perfect victim.

Shirley Jackson pens an excellent early horror novel.  The pages are filled with chills, but it never goes over the top.  The horror stays true without seeming goofy or unrealistic.

If you enjoyed the movie, you will love THE HAUNTING OF HILL HOUSE.  It is obvious that those who remade the film paid close attention to Shirley Jackson's writing style, as well as remaining true to each characters' physical and mental traits.
