Susan Crewe has hopes of one day becoming a full-fledged private detective. For now, however, she must be content to follow the lead of one Cy Tarrington, a fatherly figure who owns and operates Tarrington Investigations. Susan’s day arrives sooner than she expects, as Clarissa Rendall--a friend, well maybe not quite friend, possibly an acquaintance--is murdered. Clarissa’s murder has lots in store for Susan for the now dead Clarissa was dating Susan’s ex-boyfriend, Nicholas Tribble and in partnership with one hunky Julian Guest running a magazine titled, SpringSpeak. Needless to say, one wanna be private detective can’t help herself when the man of her dreams, Julian Guest, shows up on Tarrington Investigations' doorstep begging for help. It seems that Julian is suspect number one in the murder. Vowing he is innocent, the suspect list begins to grow as Julian throws suspicions onto Nicholas. Susan, without the consent of her boss, decides to try and solve the murder and finds the suspect list growing in leap and bounds, as do her doubts about who she believes is guilty or innocent. In the meantime, Susan also is dealing with other investigations, Raye Darke has hired her to find out if Bigfoot really does exist. Raye has had an encounter and needs someone to verify it for her. There is also the case of a father wants his daughter returned after the child's mother kidnaps her. Then, as with all private eye offices, there is the standard cheating husband escapade that must also be dealt with. Can
Susan solve Clarissa's murder and finally prove to everyone that she can
be good a private investigator? Who did murder Clarissa? Was it
really her ex-boyfriend? NO REASON TO LIE has an interesting twist in the end and isn’t a bad read. I did have issues keeping the titles of the magazines straight (WellSpring and WellSpeak). Constance Gelvin has won a variety of awards for her writing through contests such as- the Arizona Authors League, Garden Valley State Horror Writers, the Annual Writer’s Digest Writing Competition. Several of her award wining stories can be read online at www.deathlings.com Miss Gelven has also written a one act play, “Mental Health and Other Myths” which was produced by a company in New York. |
