MADEMOISELLE DE MAUPIN is a classic by Thêophile Gautier and portrays a romantic triangle involving D’Albert, his mistress Rosette, and Thêadore who is really Mlle de Maupin in disguise as a man. Through a series of journal entries and letters we learn that Mlle de Maupin has assumed the disguise of a man in order to learn about men and therefore find a man for herself. Rosette, on several occasions, throws herself at Maupin but fortunately is interrupted before Maupin’s secret can be discovered. D’Albert, seeking the affections of Maupin, must settle for a liaison with Rosette. While the book might appeal to the more sophisticated reader, I found it dry and a struggle to read. It clearly is a book for the classic audience and not for the average reader.
