When the bus stopped at Cross Roads, New Mexico, Mary Lee Clawson seemed to be the only person awake. The vaguely familiar man in the seat across from her appeared to be asleep but she could not be sure.  Somehow he seemed to be familiar. As she stood, the man arose and left the bus. The bus driver, when he heard that she was headed to the Cross Road Motor Court, offered to drop her there to save the long, dark, walk.

On arriving at the motor court owned by her late father, Mary Lee noted that it had become run down.  Her mother was drunk and was in the company of some very undesirable people. Mary Lee's husband passed away a couple of months ago, so she had no choice but to move back home. Rebuilding the motor court becomes Mary Lee's chance at a new life with her unborn child.

Jake Ramero, the man on the bus, is returning home with the label of jailbird.  He is renting one of the cabins and seems the only person who might help her rebuild the motor court.  Love may not be too far around the corner.

SONG OF THE ROAD immediately grabbed my attention, and I could not help but feel that Mary Lee deserved much better than she found. There were several unsavory characters that seemed intent on harming her and her unborn child. I couldn't help but wish them bad luck.  Fans of Ms. Garlock and readers who enjoy the 1930's as a setting will want to add
this latest in the Route 66 series to their reading list.
