Originally released in 2001, Benjamin Moser has translated Luiz Alfredo Garcia-Roza's lavish tale of murder and suspense. With Rio de Janeiro as the key setting, readers are in for an exquisite treat. Within a few days of each other, three relatively low-key (hence their colleagues know little about them) police officers are murdered--all shot at point-blank range. Little to no evidence exists, making the trio of crimes tough to solve and harder to bear. The police force has no idea who the next target could be... Inspector Espinosa, Chief of Rio's 12th District, is determined to find the common link between the three murders, and then pinpoint a ruthless assassin. When he reveals that each officer had a mistress on the side, he quickly learns that the woman are all in danger. Espinosa is determined to keep the three women alive, but the cunning killer is even more determined to see them dead. Though this is a translation, I have to say the writing is fluid and absorbing. I'm not convinced that much was lost in the translation as details are precise and the setting springs to life from each and every page. Plenty of spiraling events will keep readers on their toes, making A WINDOW IN COPACABANA a solid, not-to-be-missed reading treasure.
