Gwendolyn "Lynn" McElven arrives in Cassadaga, Florida to discover billowing smoke blowing across the road. A fire has broken out and firefighters and medics are attending to a victim on the ground. Glimpses of a car accident two years earlier come to the forefront of Lynn’s mind. Lynn
knows where she is heading, but she has no idea that she will actually
be residing amongst the “True Cassadaga Unified Psychic Society”.
Strolling to the fire scene, she encounters many of the citizens of the
town. Lynn
listens to conversations while observing the scene. Patrick, the victim, has suffered only smoke inhalation.
The blaze supposedly is caused by a coffeemaker that has been
left on. Myra is the owner
of the bookstore and a member of the society that meets in the burned
building. Others gathering
around include: Lisle, a young girl; Carl; Raphael, Patrick’s roommate
and business partner of local inn; Alex, a writer; and George, an old
college friend of Lynn’s. Lynn
has come to town to spend the summer with her Aunt Anthea and to do some
soul searching. Since her
husband died, Lynn hasn’t been able to settle down. Is Lynn ready for
this little town of psychics and other colorful characters? Patrick
feels the fire is suspicious for the smoke detectors didn’t go off and
fire officials state that there were no batteries in them. Was the fire
deliberately set for insurance money? As a way to get to Myra or perhaps
a murder attempt on Patrick’s life? Lynn
settles into Aunt Anthea’s home and discovers that her aunt grows and
distributes her own homemade herbal teas and decorative floral wreaths.
They discuss the society and how one becomes a member only through the
receiving of a sign. As
Lynn becomes familiar with members of the community, she senses that
excitement is in the air. So
begins a series of murders and mishaps. With numbers growing smaller and the murderer still on the
loose, Aunt Anthea comes up with a ceremonial plan all her own in order
to catch the murderer(s). Will her plan work? Can
the killer(s) be caught? Will
life return to “normal” for the society, and the Wiccan’s of
Cassadaga? Ms. Dees writes a very twisting tale of colorful characters and I must say I had a time trying to figure out the murderer. However, I found it difficult to keep up with the wide array of characters. All in all, I enjoyed reading of TEA AND WITCHERY in full bloom in a small town in Florida. |
