DECEPTION PLAN is the eighth book of Gulf War Veteran Patrick A. Davis. Well versed with the military’s intricate workings, and intimately involved with U-2 surveillance operations, combat missions, and the thrill of piloting an airplane, this Texas resident works today as a writer and pilot.
DECEPTION PLAN unceremoniously drops the reader into the world of cross and double cross, such as it is experienced by U.S. Colonel Ed Coffin who is summoned from his well deserved vacation to hasten to South Korea where the murder of a fellow pilot is hinting toward political intrigue, sabotage, espionage, and the makings of the next war. A closely guarded, personal secret threatens to overcome him as he finds himself teamed up with Agent Hubbard, un-affectionately known as “Mother” for being anything but, who broke his heart five years prior. Working together is a challenge, but as allies prove themselves to be betrayers, and enemies provide grudging assistance, Coffin and Hubbard have no choice but to thwart all rules and pursue a murderer too determined and fearless to be hunted any other way. Ed Coffin is on his final mission, but will he be able to bring everyone else out alive?
DECEPTION PLAN is the kind of book that grips you quickly and refuses to let go. Those who are accustomed to the – somewhat bland – diet of military whodunit writing or even other murder mysteries, will at first find themselves frustrated; Patrick A. Davis’s writing defies the apparently unanimously agreed on conventions of mystery writers and instead plots a course that is hair-raising, fascinating, and simply stunning. No, you will not be regaled with quick answers, an easy puzzle to solve, and the satisfaction of who’s who. Instead, you will feel the anger at betrayal, surprise at loyalty, and compassion for those caught in the middle alongside determined Colonel Coffin. Your heart will go out to this character, whose romance with Mother Hubbard will not end in the proverbial “happy ever after.” This book is a slice of life, presented in such a manner as to be irresistible. Murder mystery aficionados as well as military writing fans will love this book not only for the story line but also for the incomparable way with words Mr. Davis showcases. A fantastic read!
