It might be raining buckets but Dr. Andrew Pike still needed to check on one of his patients, Private Lonnie Simmons. Perhaps all those years in the war had taught him to be observant, but when Andrew espied someone moving in the crawlspace under the old house that was being used as the barracks for the military hospital, he decided it was another vagrant rummaging for garbage. Rather than get a guard to assist him, he cautiously put his head around the corner, only to see a pile of boxes and a figure closing a shutter from the inside. On entering the house and hearing footsteps in the storeroom, he called out that he had a gun and they had better give themselves up.

To his surprise, a petite and frail young woman ventured into the light and stated she only wanted to get out of the rain. She further stated she really needed a job but nobody would hire a person with Confederate ties. Andrew decided to feed her and offered her a job as housekeeper for his house. As a Yankee, he faces resistance from the locals.

So begins a great story about Andrew falling in love with Becky Souder, a woman married to a man who has not returned from the war.  Becky doesn't want to fall in love until she is knows if she is free.

There are twists and turns all through SOUTHERN COMPLICATIONS.  What will happen if word comes that Harlan Souder is alive?  How will Becky react if Harlan is declared dead?  One can only wish that Andrew and Becky will find peace and happiness.
