DON OF THE DEAD is the brainchild of Casey Daniels, an
Ohio resident with a
degree in English, and a career as a journalist, writing teacher, and
now
published author. Once herself in the shoes of Pepper Martin, the
unlikely
heroine of her book, Ms. Daniels actually did apply to a cemetery as a
part
time tour guide, yet unlike Pepper, she did not get the job. This book
is
the first in a series of Pepper Martin mysteries. Furthermore, it
appears
that behind the name Casey Daniels hides Connie Laux, also known as
Connie
Lane, who is a well known author of contemporary romances as well as
Regency-era love stories.
DON OF THE DEAD introduces the reader to Pepper Martin, former rich kid,
spoiled brat, and trophy-wife-to-be who was on the fast track to
becoming
part of the country club set. Unfortunately, the world crashed around
her
when daddy got sent to the federal big house for fraud and all the money
was
confiscated. Suddenly forced to eke out a living for herself, she
becomes a
cemetery tour guide. After an accidental bump to the head, Pepper meets
Augustino Scarpetti - Gus to his friends - mobster and dead for over 30
years. He hires a reluctant Pepper to find out who really put out a hit
on
him. Yet this endeavor causes Pepper to find herself in a lot of
precarious
and dangerous situations - and it makes it hard to explain why someone
is
loudly arguing with herself in the middle of the day!
DON OF THE DEAD is a delightfully written book that is nothing short of
brilliant. Ms. Daniels hit on a goldmine with her idea of Pepper Martin
and
her afterlife avoiding clients. The book is humorous, witty, and full of
fast-paced action. The plot is interesting right from the start, and the
characters soon become lovable. It is no surprise that it took me less
than
two days to read this page-turner! The afterlife has never been this
entertaining.
