Upon her engagement, Rebecca Collins reveals to her intended, Ryan, a family secret; long ago her family was cursed by a Sioux chief. If the curse isn't broken, Ryan will only have ten months to live after marriage! With the help of the spirits and Rebecca's friends and sister, Rebecca and her fiancé travel back in time in an attempt to stop the curse. Can it be done? Ryan and Rebecca aren't the only ones dealing with spirits. PHANTOM FACES follows the lives of many people - all inhabitants of the town where Rebecca's ancestors lived. From the local newspaperman to a female saloon owner, the entire town is affected by the sudden confluence of spirits. As tensions rise, Rebecca and Ryan wonder if they will ever be able to live happily ever after. Although Melissa Amen appears to show promising talent in PHANTOM FACES, I had great difficulty finishing the book. What started as a few apparent typos quickly turned to distracting inconsistencies. The length of the curse is first listed as being 10 months long- then later as being 10 years. "He's" turned into "'she's" within the dialog, character's names were confused, typos abounded and dialects changed. The text desperately needs a good editing. Beyond editing issues, the text was quite promising. My advice to the author, however, would be to drop time-travel and the Rebecca/Ryan plot entirely and instead keep the text focused on the townspeople. The narrative involving Rebecca and Ryan is only contained in the very beginning and end and only serves to distract from the stronger narratives within the book. With a good editing, this could be a well-worked tale of romance and intrigue.
