Margaret Mary-Catherine O’Neill (Maggie for short) lives in the small town of Stony Mill, Indiana where she works as an accountant. On her way to work one day, she gets sidetracked and begins perusing the upscale stores. As it begins pouring rain, she returns to her car that she has nicknamed Christine. Just her luck the car door won’t open again. Now she will be late for her job and will get a lecture from her boss. Trying to stay dry, she huddles under an awning and leans upon a door and the next moment she is picking herself up off the floor of a shop. There the middle-aged storeowner named Felicity Dow startles her. After a few minutes of chitchatting with each other, Felicity offers Maggie a position helping her run the store if she is interested. Also, Felicity informs Maggie that she is a witch. Of course with the stability of her accounting job shaky' Maggie is curious to know more of the position. On her way out the door, Maggie tells Felicity she will give her a ring with her decision later. The next day, Maggie is fired from her job and is now in a position to take the proffered job. On Maggie’s first day at the Enchantments store, she is left to fend for herself when Felicity has an unexpected emergency occur. As she go about performing the various duties a store clerk would, Tom Fielding, a police officer arrives. Deputy Fielding proceeds to tell Maggie that Felicity’s estranged sister, Isabella was dead and that Felicity was at the station being questioned. He warns her it is in her best interest to find a new job. Although Maggie does not know Felicity Dow very well, she feels sure she is innocent. Maggie’s mundane Midwestern life taken a very unexpected road. Left with several unanswered questions, Maggie is forced into doing her own sleuthing into this mysterious death. THE TROUBLE WITH MAGIC is the first in a new series. The author takes the reader on a fascinating ride as her character Maggie tries to solve the mystery that could land her boss in prison for a very long time. The best way to describe this book would be: a hint of romance with much intrigue, mystery, and magic in a small Midwestern town setting. Several of the characters have a motive but they also have alibis. It keeps the reader guessing the true identify of the killer till the very end. It will be interesting to see what is on tap in the upcoming books of this new series. |
