Lady Felicity Melville, an amateur astronomer, is viewing the night skies when she spots a man climbing from her neighbor’s bedroom window. When Nigel Cavendish sees Felicity looking down at him, they engage in a conversation and soon Nigel has climbed her trellis and is on her balcony. Eventually he makes his escape but not before Felicity has decided to marry him. Subsequently whenever Nigel appears at a party, Felicity is also there and accuses him of following her. Nigel is determined not to marry but cannot get Felicity out of his mind.

As the attraction between Nigel and Felicity grows, the reader is swept up in the ongoing meetings between the two and it seems inevitable that marriage must occur but the two are determined to stay separate. Can their friends and family push them closer together?
