At
first appearances, WEEKENDS IN NEW ENGLAND looks like your average
romance. Hannah Jergen is
married, albeit not happily, but having come from a convent where she
was about to become a nun, she married the first man to ask. She realizes her marriage is a sham, but it is a marriage… Denny Lorenzo is a renowned Jewish singer. His fans treat him like royalty, but behind the scenes his marriage is in ruins. The only thing keeping him with his wife is the fact that she lost her memory following a tragic car accident in which Denny was behind the wheel. When Hannah and Denny meet, their worlds are rocked. The two know they were destined to be together for eternity, but neither knows how to end their troubled marriages. So
far, it sounds just like a romance in which there can be no happy ending
for all, right? Well, here
comes the twist… Hannah disappears and her kidnapper asks for a huge ransom. Suspicions are first cast on Hannah’s husband and on Denny’s wife, but no one knows for sure. It could be either spouse determined to keep the lovers apart; they could be working together; or is there a possibility that Hannah was in the wrong place at the wrong time? Denny knows only one thing; he cannot rest until the woman he loves is found—hopefully alive. Obviously the theme of adultery plays pretty prominently in Linda Alexander’s book, while even rape finds its way into the fold. I know some readers have issues with those topics, so if you find yourself to be among that majority, I don’t recommend this book. If you are thinking the book sounds totally romantic, I have to warn you to be prepared because in the end the book was more of an edge-of-your-seat suspense novel. If you are looking to head on a fictional ride that keeps you guessing, WEEKENDS IN NEW ENGLAND is a perfect choice.
