The year is 1932 and the Great Depression has left most families with no money
or employment. One boy spies his father, who tells the family he is still
employed, selling apples on the street corner. With the realization that
even his family has now fallen victim to the effects of the depression, this
young boy joins his friend selling newspapers.
Despite all, people still love baseball. With a little ingenuity and the
help of Babe Ruth himself, this boy’s family might just make it through the
tough times.
Baseball season is just getting started. I know in my house, the
television or radio is always tuned in to the Red Sox. My husband is
always looking for ways to share his love for the game with our children.
David Adler & Terry Widener’s delightful book gave him a perfect
opportunity.
THE BABE & I is a work of fiction, but you can easily imagine the situation
happening in real life. The heartwarming story easily earns its spot on
our keeper shelf. Geared towards the developing reader, the
vocabulary is a little tougher, but still easy to follow.
