This book begins perfectly with the statement:  Felix Gomez didn't like what Desert Storm had done to him.  He went to war a soldier, and came back a vampire.  But, Felix isn't only a vampire.  He's a vampire with a severe case of angst.  He doesn't drink blood, well, not human blood, and he doesn't seem to like immortality very much.  Instead of hanging out with the Undead, Felix works as a private eye.  After all, those super vampiric senses make surveillance (not to mention breaking and entering) a snap, and he doesn't really have to worry (much) about getting killed.  Guilt, after all, is the reason that Felix is a vampire in the first place.  After Felix's friendly fire kills a family, he asks for a fate worse than death and gets an un-death worse than life.  So, now Felix is a vampire and what's a boy to do but use his skills to do a little good.

When Felix's college roommate, Gilbert Odin, hires him to investigate some strange goings-on at the Department of Energy plant in Rocky Flats, Colorado, Felix agrees.  The case seems to consist of a spree of nymphomania among the female guards, but as Felix delves deeper into the case he discovers that the ladies of Rocky Flats are not the only ones affected.  In addition, the "infected" nymphos don't seem to be quelled by Felix's hypnotic powers, and, in fact, they seem to amplify the amorous situation.  But, lust gone amok at the plutonium processing plant isn't Felix's only problem--he also has to deal with vampire slayers, dryads, and hired goons--not to mention the Feds.  But, that's alright.  Felix is a guy who can handle anything--except his own personal demons.  With his hard-hitting investigatory style and his vampire super powers, the case will be closed in no time, right?

THE NYMPHOS OF ROCKY FLATS grabs you from the very first page.  This book was actually de-classified by the Federal Government (no kidding!) and starting from the first page you are drawn into Felix's world of dark passions.  Although this is a story revolving around nymphomania, the greater passions in the story deal with Felix himself.  He is a dark figure torn between being a vampire and a human.  Guilt-ridden and unable to embrace either life or death, Felix evokes a great deal of interest.  The is the ultimate anti-hero, a dark knight in search of his soul (and, okay, a few good times along the way.)  Although Felix hits the pavement and searches for clues in true fiction noir fashion, this is also a story about vampires.  And, the vampires in the story are anything but usual.  They can be comic, cruel, and ribald, but they are always entertaining.  The mystery is good, but the story itself is great!  THE NYMPHOS OF ROCKY FLATS will have you in stitches and sometimes in tears, but always riveted to the page.  Very, very nicely done, Mr. Acevedo!
