Not having been a reader of Jeff
Abbott’s writing in the past, I had no idea what a treat I was in for as I
opened the cover of his latest release, Cut And Run. I am a long time fan of the
mystery/ thriller/suspense genres, and this book was a pleasant gem among the
stones.
Whit Mosley, the central “good guy” in the story has begun to make his mark
in the world: a judge, barely out of his twenties from a small town in Texas.
But Whit is plagued with unresolved issues about the mother who left him and his
brothers when they were small. Whit has had questions about his mother all his
life, but now that his father, Babe, is facing imminent death due to liver
cancer, Whit feels compelled to find his mother to answer his questions and to
see Babe before he passes from this life.
What ensues is a search for his mother, Ellen, who has since changed her name to
Eve, and the subsequent drama that follows, including interaction with the crime
family Eve has been working for. Whit is placed in situations where his oath to
uphold the law as a judge is called into play as a son.
The action begins early in the story and doesn’t let up, causing the reader to
flip page after page to experience the delicious suspense and pathos. Abbott
develops his characters well, without inordinate detail, and weaving their
personalities into a believable plot. Having read this selection of Abbott’s
work, I am looking forward to finding the other results of his writing and
immersing myself happily.
