Kara O'Keefe, a young violinist and music teacher, knows a bit about
her heritage, but in pawning her beloved violin, Quicksilver, she
embroils herself in a morality play which will ultimately teach her
much more about her family. As the story opens, Kara believes that she
has no choice but to sacrifice the family heirloom to help with bills
which have accumulated due to her father's cancer treatment. The
narration skips among four different point of view characters,
revealing that far more is at work here than a simple tale of a grown
child giving up portions of her life for an ailing parent.

Perhaps due to the hidden powers which are just beginning to affect
Kara, she finds herself in Yesterday's Dream, a pawn shop owned by a
Sidhe, which turns out to be the same pawn shop her grandfather went
to when he was a young immigrant in need of money. The proprietress of
the shop, Maggie McCormick, is accompanied by a sprite, whose
alter-ego is that of a cat, who assists her and gives her comfort when
she is battling evil. Lucien Blank is the face of evil in this story,
and his point of view is one to which the author returns from time to
time.

Along with the shifting points of view, there’s quite a bit of
dialect, which depending on the taste of the reader, either assists in
developing character, or simply makes the book a chore to read. The
author also employs a number of flashbacks, rather lengthy ones, and
this novel has a conclusion which doesn’t really bring the conflicts
into resolution, thus setting up for a sequel.

YESTERDAY'S DREAMS, which is labeled as “urban fantasy” by the author,
interweaves Celtic mythology into a modern tale. This story sometimes
has the reader scrambling to the glossary in the back to keep the
facts, or perhaps the elements of the fantasy, straight.

For readers who want something a bit different, have an interest in
Celtic myth, or have an interest in sprites inhabiting a pawnshop,
YESTERDAY'S DREAMS just might fill the bill.
